ALLOTMENT PLOTS

Allotment gardening was the traditional role for the site and it is still intended that allotments will remain the backbone of the project. The site is capable of sustaining many allotment plots and provision has been made to turn over more land to allotment growers as demand grows .

W e can , in addition to proving allotments, create a symbiosis of uses for the site each of which are mutually beneficial. By diversifying into a community garden with wildlife habitats we can combin e uses of the site , make it more productive and attractive, and provid e facilities for many more local people. W e aim to encourage respectful use of the site and preserve it for the benefit of all.

In years gone by, allotments gave people the means to feed their families, they provided a respite from the confines of work in factories and mines, and today they can still be the perfect antidote to a day in the office, a stressful commute and the limitations of a small garden. Growing your own fruit and vegetables on an allotment site is still a very rewarding and healthy way of feeding your family. In addition to this , can there be a better way of spending a day than out in the fresh air , in beautiful surroundings , meeting your neighbours and striking up new friendships at the same time ?

Our gardens will look a little different to traditional allotment sites . For the present, we will not permit the erection of sheds , greenhouses etc as these might be a temptation to vandals . In future years we hope to be able to revisit this restriction and to permit some structures, which might include a communal polytunnel with all the benfits that could offer growers. Whatever happens, we will be careful to ensure that nothing blight s the terrific views the site has to offer.

Staveley Town Council, our landlords, are keen to encourage the use of allotments and we hope to benefit from their offer ed use of rotavators and large equipment from the association of allotment sites that the Council is hoping to sponsor .

And should the weather ever be less than perfect, or if you should just fancy a sit down, there is also Compost Corner our very own unpretentious meeting place adjacent to the local community centre , which has tea, coffee and toilet facilities .
