The Tale of the Mastin Moor Boulders !A Link to the picsTrepidation, yes that's the word When grey clouds raced the morning light Hmmn, perhaps , maybe, second thoughts occurred, Should we postpone, what would be right?
Ah well, in for a penny , in for a pound, There might not be another chance Of Lavers generosity. No second time around Decision time, time to take a stance .
So, calls are made and plans agreed, “Go for lift off”! Literally as they say, Gather round all we will need, Head for the hills. Todays the day.
Rendevous at Donkins corner And then to Bolehill Quarry As the day gets wet and wilder Its 2 pm, no time to tarry!
The quarryman is very nice But many “off cuts” have been sold No time though , can't think twice Grab the straps , lets be bold!
Scrabbling over stones and slurry, Finding what we can, where we can, Loading with the grab and grabbing in a hurry Straps , grab and the hand of man!
Darker it gets though all done by three, Fifteen tonnes says Captain Kirk To check the quarryman comes out to see “Six tonnes the lot I ‘ll charge” says he!
Swift as robbers we getaway To Mastin Moor we're bound, Still an hour of light this day, Through gales and rain around!
At last we carefully negotiate Our fifteen tonnes of stone Inches to spare, through the top gate We're in! Oh no! we moan.
Captain Kirk has gone beserk He's strayed off the beaten path ! The lorry's stuck and nowt will work And the rain's our “early bath”!
Cold sleet and wind drives in our faces As we drive nowhere fast, It's “rescue” time! Egg on our faces, The cavalry arrives, at last!
Off with the boulders, lighten the load, Even 560 horsepower struggles to move, It chunters and blocks the road , As the Laver lorry churns the same groove.!
At last At last ! With what relief Our groundfast lorry wins, But wait, we watch in disbelief As once again ……..wheelspins!
A second time our heroes hook on And pull with mane and might, As patient motorists watch on, Shuddering behemoths in the night!
Eternities often last, So little time, in times of need, But eternity had passed, By the time we did succeed!
We had our boulders situate On Mastin Moor, amongst the nature But putting them in place would wait For a day yet in the future!
“Ah well” reflected Captain Kirk “Had we stranded down the hill A Laver lorry that could not work Would not have looked so well “
Perhaps the fates were kinder then Than the elements that day December 13 th 2006 when The boulders came to stay. |
